Susan G. Komen for the Cure Funding Supports Metastatic Breast Cancer Conference

May 16, 2009 — Susan G. Komen for the Cure® was pleased to support the Hope for the Future: A Comprehensive Look at Metastatic Breast Cancer conference on May 16, 2009. The annual conference is devoted solely to the concerns of those living with metastatic breast cancer. It was organized by the Metastatic Breast Cancer Network and hosted by Drs. Eric Winer and Nancy Lin at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, Massachusetts. Patients, health care providers, friends and family were all invited to attend this free conference.

Dr. Eric Winer, chief scientific advisor for Komen for the Cure, as well as many other experts in the field gave presentations on the treatment of metastatic breast cancer and the unique issues those patients face.

More than 250 women living with metastatic breast cancer came from all over the country. They were able to gain information and support about metastatic breast cancer and how to be their own best advocate. These patients were recognized as an important patient population – one that often gets overlooked. “It was important for me to see the number of strong, vibrant women who are living with metastatic breast cancer and not just those I see at my doctor's office who are dying from this disease” says Laura, who attended the conference.

“The conference was a huge success! The feedback that we have received has been very positive – proof that it was a fabulous event – an event providing educational information to enable us all to be our own best advocate while providing hope for the future,” says Ellen Moskowitz, MBCN president.
