Risk factors
- Age (95% diagnosed after age 40; median age at diagnosis is 61)
- Being female (99% of cases are female; 1% male)
- BRCA gene mutations (1% of the female population)
- 60% lifetime risk of getting breast cancer
- 15-40% risk of getting ovarian cancer (compared to 1.4% risk in general population)
- Ashkenazi Jews (originally from Eastern Europe):higher risk
- 10 times more likely to have BRCA mutation (2.6% vs .2% for general population)
- But, only 7% of BC in Ashkenazi Jews is caused by BRCA mutations
- Family history – first degree relative (10% of all bc)
- Exposure to radiation at early age
- DCIS or other cancers
- Dense breasts
