Risk factors

  • Age (95% diagnosed after age 40; median age at diagnosis is 61)
  • Being female (99% of cases are female; 1% male)
  • BRCA gene mutations (1% of the female population)
  • 60% lifetime risk of getting breast cancer
  • 15-40% risk of getting ovarian cancer (compared to 1.4% risk in general population)
  • Ashkenazi Jews (originally from Eastern Europe):higher risk
    • 10 times more likely to have BRCA mutation (2.6% vs .2% for general population)
    • But, only 7% of BC in Ashkenazi Jews is caused by BRCA mutations
  • Family history – first degree relative (10% of all bc)
  • Exposure to radiation at early age
  • DCIS or other cancers
  • Dense breasts
